West PA Chefs Bring Services Up a Notch!

Members take comprehensive exam for Certified Personal Chef®!

USPCA Certified Personal ChefOn Saturday, March 13, 2010, Members of West PA Chefs took one step forward to bring their businesses up to the next level!

Chapter members who have yet to have completed the USPCA’s Certified Personal Chef® Exam all did so prior to their monthly chapter meeting. Those members included Chef Catherine of Catherine’s Personal Chef Service, Chef JoAnn from My Secret Chef Personal Chef Service, Chef Melody from Your Dinner Secret Personal Chef Service, Chapter Secretary Chef Marcia from Heart Healthy Personal Chef Service and Chapter President Chef Tim Hering from Dinner Magician Personal Chef Service. Chapter Treasurer Chef Carole CPC from Organic Personal Chef Service, who is all ready a Certified Personal Chef®, proctored the exam.

The comprehensive exam is just one step on the road to becoming a Certified Personal Chef®. The first step happens a minimum of 2 years prior to certification when each USPCA member must take a series of exams to show a working knowledge of how to run a personal chef business. All USPCA members must pass these exams prior to ever serving their first client. The United States Personal Chef Association is the only organization for personal chefs which require all members to take a series of tests prior to cooking for clients.

In addition to achieving a minimum of 2 years as a personal chef and passing those initial exams, each USPCA member chef desiring certification must compile a number of points towards certification. These points include continuing education credits, references from clients, teaching credits and credits which show proficiency in running a successful business.

In 1996 the United States Personal Chef Association created this certification program with a three-fold purpose:

  1. To provide a standard by which the public could assess a Personal Chef’s competency.
  2. To provide the Personal Chef with industry recognition of their professional commitment.
  3. To establish standards by which the Personal Chef industry could become self-regulated.

The United States Personal Chef Association remains the only association to hold the federally trademarked designation of “Certified Personal Chef®” and “CPC”. This trademark is an industry endorsement of professional expertise and assures customers of the chef’s commitment to excellence. It also demonstrates their committment to the program requirements, standards, and procedures as established by the United States Personal Chef Association. These requirements are updated regularly to reflect, support, and enhance the growth of the personal chef industry. Obtaining this designation allows a Personal Chef to join the elite ranks within the industry and demonstrates to potential clients that the chef is the professional they want to hire and invite into their home.

A Certified Personal Chef® is a chef with a minimum of two (2) full years experience as a personal chef who is engaged in the purchasing, preparing, cooking and serving of food on a “cook-for-hire” basis. They are responsible for menu planning and development, marketing, financial management and operational decisions for their private business. They provide services to a variety of clients; possesses a thorough knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and nutrition and have the work experience, education, business knowledge and culinary group activities and participation required to comply with this certification.

The “CPC” designation was the first certification for personal chefs listed in the Federal Government’s employee certification database.

Western PA USPCA Member Chefs Usher in Beginning of Personal Chef Season!

Celebrate the Season by Bringing the Family Back to the Dinner Table to Enjoy a Restaurant Quality, Home Cooked Meal Without Having to Shop, Cook or Clean Up!

USPCA Chefs Follow Personal Chef Code of Ethics

Members of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of The United States Personal Chef Association LLC (USPCA) are excited to usher in the beginning of Personal Chef Season in Western PA and Eastern Ohio! Their intent is to bring notice to a special segment of the service industry and to help their clients find the time to bring healthy, nutritious and home cooked meals back to their dinner tables.

With spare time becoming more the exception rather than the rule and time that used to be spent around the dinner table is now time spent running from one obligation to another with fat and preservative laden foods being consumed on the run, the need for using the services of a Personal Chef is on the rise.

Personal chefs come to their client’s homes to prepare custom meals for a wide range of clients and situations, including home meal replacement, dinner parties for up to 30 people, cooking classes, interactive cooking parties and menu consultations. Clients using this special service represent active households, seniors and individuals with restrictive or special dietary needs.
Each Western PA USPCA  Chapter Member Chef owns and operates his or her own independent business and will work personally with up to 20 unique clients per month, usually preparing a variety of meals at once in the client’s own kitchen. The chapter currently has 11 active members serving the Western PA and Eastern Ohio area, while there are over 20 combined USPCA and non affiliated personal chefs in the entire region.

The direct tangible benefit to hiring your own chef will be the time saved in the actual meal preparation and the associated shopping, while still enjoying palate specific meals at a surprisingly reasonable cost. Those who choose a chef to cook for a dinner party will no longer need to spend countless hours in the kitchen and will have more time to actually enjoy their party and the company of their guests. The time and money saved as well as the health benefits of having preservative free meals at your fingertips is incalculable. . .

West PA Chefs “Get Motivated” at Day Long Seminar

Get Motivated Seminar

Four Members of the Western PA Chapter of the USPCA spent the day with about 17,000 people on August 11, 2009 at the Get Motivated Business Seminar held at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, PA.

Chapter Treasurer Carole Ortenzo CPC alerted the members of the event after hearing about it on the radio last week. Although it was short notice, chapter member Jo Ann Bohonik joined Carole, Chapter Secretary Marcia Schuller, Chapter President Tim Hering  and Jordan Henderson, Owner of Soap Alchemy LLC for the event.

The cost of admission was just $4.95 per person or $19 total for groups of 4 or more. Price was only good for tickets purchased prior to the event and were nearly $300 at the gate.

In spite of gridlocked traffic which caused several of the members as well as hundreds of attendees from several surrounding states to arrive late, the seminar proved to be packed full of interesting speakers covering topics such as Investing, Motivating employees as well as yourself, Leadership and other topics as well as offering give-a-ways such as a Disney Vacation and $10,000. Between speakers, the attendees were entertained with music and dancing.

Featured speakers included Tamara Lowe, who offered insight into why some people are motivated by one thing and others are motivated by something completely different.  She called this “Motivational DNA.

100% of the proceeds from her new book, entitled Get Motivated, are donated to several charitable children’s organizations.

Ms. Lowe’s husband interviewed Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Palamalu, who seemed very humbled to be included in the program. Other speakers included Terry Bradshaw and Zig Ziglar, who was joined onstage by his son, Tom Ziglar. The Ziglar’s portion of the program also included vintage clips from some of the many presentations given by the motivational guru as well as questions asked to the elder Ziglar from his daughter.

Former New Yourk City Mayor Rudy Giulani spoke to the audience about the importance of doing what you do well and finding people who do the things you do not do well in order to effectively lead. He also spoke of the importance of being prepared for any eventuallity so when something happens you can react accordingly even if something happens that you did not plan for. In that instance, taking parts of the various plans that have been constructed for other events, you will be more likely to quickly respond to the unexpected. He referenced the terrorist attacks of 9-11-01 as such an event.

General Colin Powel was another featured speaker.  His many years of public service were the seeds to his presentation as he spoke of his service under President Ronald Reagan and the fall of communism in the former Soviet Union. He also spoke of his years prior to becoming a 4 star general and the impact those years had on his abilities to lead during his time as Head of the Joint Cheifs of Staff as well as when he was Secretary of State under George W. Bush.

He talked about gaining trust in the people who follow you, and the true measure of that is when those people question the outcome, but still follow in spite of their questions.

The day was rounded off with a final speaker who talked about using the internet as a way to create a home based business.

Western PA USPCA Chapter members as well as Mr. Henderson went home tired, but full of ideas on taking each of their businesses to the next level.
